2014-15 Inaugural Michigan Fantasy Hockey League Season
..::: COMMUNICATION :::..
As I’ve said early on here, communication is crucial for this league. The best way for everyone to communicate effectively and quickly is to utilize the league website, which you're obviously on right now. It’s mobile-friendly, so you can use it on the go and there are several sub-forums to discuss drafting, trades and an off-topic section to talk about whatever you want really. Additionally, each team will be given its own sub-forum where other managers can find things like rosters, cap space and a trading block for quick reference.
Auction-style draft
Each team will have a budget of $200, with which they bid on players against other managers to construct their squad. Draft order doesn’t really matter in this type of draft, but for those who have never done an auction draft, it proceeds as follows:
1.) The first manager nominates a player for auction, starting the bidding at $1.
2.) Teams then increase the bid until only one team remains and the player is sold. (Bids are made only in even dollar amounts, e.g. No $0.50 bids.)
3.) Then, the next manager nominates a player and the process repeats.
Drafting ultimately concludes when the managers fill their 27-man rosters. All players will be signed to either 1, 2, or 3-year contracts. Managers must inform me of their finalized roster (contract lengths) within 24 hours from the conclusion of the draft in order to be ready for the start of our season on Monday, Oct. 13. You will all likely make your contract decisions on draft day, but should you fail to report this information, I will assume all your contracts are 1-year deals.
Consider that $200 budget as your ‘salary cap’ for the entire season. Whatever you have left over after drafting will be used for your season’s waiver acquisition funds.
DATE: Saturday, Oct. 11 - 11:00 p.m. (approximately)
LOCATION: Joe’s house (contact me for details)
Pre-Draft Values
For your convenience, I've included the pre-draft auction values (as set by Yahoo) so you get a feel for what you might expect come draft day. It's nice that Yahoo adjusts the values based on your roster size, so since ours is much larger than their default, the values on top-end guys are projected to be lower. PROJECTED. Who knows what will happen come draft day...

*28 Total Roster Spots
C, C, C, C, LW, LW, LW, LW, RW, RW, RW, RW, D, D, D, D, D, D, G, G (full, NHL-size starting lineup; 4 GOALIES MAX)
8 bench spots (BN)
1 long-term injured reserve spot (IR)
1 short-term IR/day-to-day spot (signified on Yahoo! as ‘IR+’)
*We will add 2 more bench spots for a new total of 10, considering we'll be drafting rookies every year. This will be the max.
Injured Reserve
Any player placed on short-term IR (7 days minimum) will open up a roster spot. Any player placed on long-term IR (More than 24 calendar days or 10 games) will both open a roster spot AND give his manager half his cap hit back. If the player’s contract is worth $1, you will be compensated with $1 rather than $0.50. We will only work with even dollar amounts.
Lineup changes
Lineup changes can be made daily, so set your lineup every day or set it on Sunday for the whole week. Whatever works best for you.
..::: WAIVERS/FREE AGENCY :::..
Dropped players will have a two-day waiting period before joining free agency. Again, whatever you don't spend of your $200 during the draft, you will have left over to spend via free agency or use to your benefit in taking on a more expensive contract in a trade.
Waiver Wire
Using remaining salary cap space from the draft, teams can blindly bid against other teams to sign players off the waiver wire throughout the season.
– ONLY players signed to 1-YEAR CONTRACTS can be dropped to free agency in exchange for another player. You’ll see below in the Offer Sheets section that players with expiring contracts in the off-season will be subject to being signed by other teams, so take care when considering who you want to give 1-year contracts following the draft.
– If you’re confident nobody is going after your player, bid small. If you’re going for a bigger name or just want to play it safe, put some extra money down as insurance to ensure you get your player. Because this is a daily league, waivers will be processed on a – you guessed it – daily basis. Because this is a dynasty-style league, there will probably not be nearly as many acquisitions made throughout the season as you’re used to seeing.
Should you win a player for the same value as the player you are dropping in the transaction, then it’s basically as if nothing ever happened cap-wise.
..::: SCORING :::..
Head-to-Head: Points
Teams matchup each week and, quite simply, compete to earn the most total points across 10 different skater categories and four different goaltender categories. The team with the most points after the week wins. The categories with their corresponding point values are shown below.
..::: OFF-SEASON :::..
..::: OFF-SEASON :::..
Free Agency/Offer Sheets
The majority of the off-season activity will occur in the 3 weeks (specific dates TBD) leading up to the Rookie and Waiver Drafts:
WEEK 1: Managers can sign pending free agents from other teams to offer sheets. For example, if I have Sidney Crosby and his contract expires this off-season, you can submit a new $ amount to sign him for. I will then have one week to match your offer. If I can’t afford to match or choose not to, you get Crosby and in return as compensation, I receive draft picks and a dollar amount from you. The compensation breakdown is as follows.
WEEK 2: Managers will decide which of their currently-expiring contracts to keep. If you don’t re-sign a player, he will return to the waiver pool and be eligible for the Waiver Draft. Yahoo! will update their player $ values for the next season and that will be the price you have to pay to keep your pending free agents.
Contract Value | Compensation |
$1 - $5 | 2nd-rd Rookie Draft pick (current year) 3rd-rd Rookie Draft pick (next year), $2 |
$6 - $10 | 1st-rd Rookie Draft pick (current year), 3rd-rd Rookie Draft pick (next year), $4 |
$11 - $15 | 1st-rd Rookie Draft pick (current year), 2nd-rd Rookie Draft pick (next year), $5 |
$15+ | 1st-rd Rookie Draft pick (current year), 1st-rd Rookie Draft pick (next year), $6 |
Teams can cut players and trade during the off-season, but whatever players are on a team’s roster after this second week will be your roster heading into the drafts. Much like the real NHL, we will heavily rely on trading as the encouraged method of improving one's team.
Waiver Draft
To fill out your roster, a Waiver Draft will be held each off-season. Use your available cap to bid on available free agents just like our initial draft.
Rookie Draft
The Rookie Draft will be performed as a 3-round, standard “pick’em” style draft each off-season.
1st overall pick - goes to the winner of the Consolation Playoffs the previous year.
The rest of the order will be derived from the reverse order of the final standings.
All rookies will be given the same 3-year ‘entry level contract’ of $1. This contract does not take effect until the rookie is “called up”/inserted into your starting lineup from your minor-league team. Managers can hold rookies on their roster without “calling them up” for a maximum of two years before being released to free agency.
Managers CAN trade their Rookie Draft picks during the season. The only catch is that you obviously won't know which draft position you hold until the Consolation Playoffs conclude.

..::: EXTRAS :::..
Trade Review
Trades will ultimately be reviewed by the Commissioner, but managers will have TWO (2) days to protest any pending trades. With 10 teams, if a trade receives protest from 5/8 remaining teams not involved in the trade, it will automatically be vetoed, but I don’t anticipate this ever being an issue in our league. Should two teams agree on a deal, it fits within their respective cap limits and there is little-to-no protest, it will go through with no problem.
HOWEVER, to confirm a trade and ensure it works with both teams' budgets, the manager proposing a trade needs to post it on the website here under the Trade Talk section. Simply title your thread "Team1/Team2 Trade" and post what the deal is, including the salary figure(s) of the involved player(s). The other manager will need to reply that they accept and then it shall be validated. Word-of-mouth deals don't make it official. No trade will be processed unless both sides post that they accept on here. Processed trades will take effect immediately. Keeping track of salary caps is a little more difficult on my end in a league like this, so this is the best way to do it.
Awards & Polls
There will be post-season league awards that we will house on the forums. These will consist of things like “Best Manager” and “Most Improved Team.” Additionally, polls will be posted regarding league settings for managers to vote on beginning next season in order to help improve the league overall.
